Studies on the Timed vital Capacity of the Silicotics

Abstract

The various timed segments of the vital capacity were analyzed from the Spiro grams of 58 healthy and 97 silicotic coal-miners, recorded on a kymograph drum rotating 3cm. per second in the recumbent position. The results may be summarized as follows:
1. The actual timed capacities as well as the capacities in per cent of the total, increased in proportion with the age.
2. The silicotics exhibited more delayed timed capacities than the control group, as manifested in the two and three second capacities.
3. Both the actual one-second capacity and the one-second capacity in percent of the total showed a close association with the maximal breathing capacity. Thus, the indirect maximal breathing capacity may be calculated as 41 times the one-second capacity.
4. The correlation between the one-second capacity and the RV/TLC ratio failed to reach a statistically significant level.
5. The correlation between the actual one-second capacity and the one-second capacity in percent of the total was found to be high in the silicotics.
